Volleyball Opens Hall of Fame Tournament with Straight Set Defeat Over Smith
Northampton, Mass. – Brone Lobichusky '14 recorded nine kills and Chastity Hopkins '15 and Kat Montemurro '13 each finished with seven as the Swarthmore College (16-4) volleyball team swept co-host Smith in the opener of the 2012 Hall of Fame Classic by a 25-16, 25-13, 25-11 final.
Lobichusky posted three put-aways in the first set, four in the second, and two, on only three attempts, in the third.
Swarthmore hit .263 for the match including a dominant .351 in the deciding third set. The Garnet jumped out early as Montemurro, who recorded her 1000th career kill in the team's last outing on Wednesday, finished three of her first five attacks. Lobichusky also recorded three kills in the span of four points midway through the set as the Garnet broke free after the teams had split the first 12 points.
The second set saw Swarthmore's service game at its best as five players combined for six aces, including a pair from Montemurro who finished with three in the match. As a team, the Garnet finished with 11 aces overall.
With Lobichusky and Hopkins, who hit .429 in the match, controlling the middle, the Garnet again jumped out early in the third set and won going away with Zahra Ahmed '15 recording a solo block on set and match point.
Allie Coleman '13 finished with 30 assists.
Swarthmore returns to the court on Saturday with a pair of matches from Mt. Holyoke. The Garnet faces Tufts at 11 AM and Colby at 3 PM.
