Swarthmore Volleyball and the Centennial Conference 'DIGS' Pediatric Cancer Research; Garnet's Designated Match This Saturday vs. McDaniel
LANCASTER, Pa. - During the month of October, the Swarthmore College volleyball team and the Centennial Conference are joining together to raise awareness and money for pediatric cancer research.
Prior to a designated match, each Centennial Conference school will collect donations and pledges from friends, families, and team supporters for each dig the team records in its selected match. A dig is a defensive play where a player prevents an opponent's attack from scoring by "digging" the ball before it hits the ground. Pledges and donations will be collected in the first week of November. Swarthmore's designated match is October 15 at home against McDaniel.
Over the last five years, the 11 teams have raised $42,857 in donations and pledges to support breast cancer research. Last year the money raised ($6,500) was donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), a non-profit organization based in Haverford, Pa., dedicated to empowering all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life.
For the 2011 campaign, the money raised by each team will go directly to Tanner's Touch. Tanner's Touch, a non-profit organization based in Carroll County, Md., was founded by former Gettysburg assistant volleyball coach Stephanie (Yingling) Moore in honor of her son who was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer in 2009. Tanner's Touch will, in turn, donate the proceeds to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Cancer Research.
The donations will be collected by the end of October and the total amount raised by our schools will be announced at the Centennial Volleyball Championships on November 4-5, 2011.

About Tanner's Touch
Tanner's Touch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization developed to raise money for pediatric cancer research and families of children with cancer headquartered in Carroll County, Md. This organization was created in honor of founder Stephanie Moore's three-year old son, Tanner (pictured, right). He was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer called Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma in March 2009. Tanner's Touch was found in October of 2009, just seven months after Tanner was diagnosed with cancer. Moore said, "We were amazed by the amount of love and support from our friends, family and community. Because of the support, we decided that we had to give back." Tanner's Touch has raised money for Johns Hopkins Pediatric Cancer research and also for individual families, including a family who lost their nine-year-old daughter to bone cancer and needed help to buy a grave
