Melissa Frick and Rebecca Hammond Named to Capital One/CoSida Academic All-District IV Women's Track & Field First Team

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - Senior Melissa Frick and junior Rebecca Hammond of the Swarthmore College women's track & field team have been named to the Capital One/CoSida Academic All-District IV Women's Track & Field First Team, the organization announced on Thursday evening.

The honor marks the first time that both Frick and Hammond have made the all-district first team. With their first-team selections, both Frick and Hammond are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Frick (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) capped her four-year career at Swarthmore with high honors on the track and in the classroom. Frick excelled for both the cross country and track & fields teams, earning All-Region Cross Country honors after finishing 17th (23:39) at 2011 Mideast Regional and earning a Centennial Conference bronze medal as part of the 4x800 team at 2012 Indoor Championships (9:44.97). During the outdoor season, Frick ran the second fastest outdoor 5,000 meter run in school history (17:34.58) at Princeton Distance Meet and finished fifth in 5,000 at 2012 Centennial Outdoor Championships (17:42.85). Frick's achievements away from the track are just as remarkable. A six-time member of the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, Frick received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship in 2012.

Hammond (Winters, Calif./Davis) returned to the NCAA Championships in 2012 and continued to re-write the school record book throughout the season. The junior finished 12th overall in the 800 meter run (2:16.08) at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships, just missing out on All-America status. In the outdoor season, Hammond broke her own school record in the 800 meter run (2:12.56) at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet in May. Hammond earned the silver medal in the 800 meter run at both the 2012 Centennial Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Off the track, Hammond is a four-time member of the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and a member of the 2011 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team.

Frick and Hammond join David D'Annunzio '12, Micah Rose '12, Genny Pezzola '12 and Allie Coleman '13 as 2011-12 Capital One/CoSida Academic All-District selections.
