Lia Carlson to Compete in 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championships
INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomore Lia Carlson of the Swarthmore College women's tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Individual Singles Championship, the selection committee announced on Friday.
Carlson makes the field after originally being selected as an alternate. Carlson is the first member of the Swarthmore women's tennis team to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship since Rachel Wallwork '10 in 2009.
The 2012 individual singles championships will take place May 24-26 in Cary, N.C.
The reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Year, Carlson had a breakout sophomore campaign, finishing 17-4 in singles play and 10-3 from the No. 1 slot in Centennial play. During the 2011-12 season, Carlson posted key victories over three-time All-American Laura Chen (Carnegie Mellon), the Atlantic South Region's No. 3 ranked player Elaine Baik (Johns Hopkins) and First Team All-Centennial selections Alysia Rodgers (Dickinson) and Jordan Finnegan (Washington College).
