Women's Tennis Upset by Dickinson, 7-2
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (7-4, 6-1 CC) suffered its first Centennial Conference loss of the season on Saturday, dropping a 7-2 decision to Dickinson (13-3, 6-2 CC) from the Cunningham Courts.
Junior Stephanie Chia highlighted the Garnet performance, winning in both singles and doubles play..
Chia partnered with sophomore Epiphany English to win at number three doubles against Hajnoczky/Altholtz, 9-7. The Red Devils captured the other two doubles matches with Rodgers/Lavery defeating sophomore Lia Carlson and junior Emily Rosenblum, 8-3 at number one, and Oczkowski/Zoll defeating sophomore Brooke Wilkins and freshman Gayatri Iyengar at number two, 8-4.
The Swarthmore women fought hard in singles, but could not come back from the 2-1 deficit after doubles. Chia picked up the lone singles point for the day at number four, taking down Hajnoczky, 6-1, 6-2.
At number one singles, Carlson lost to Rodgers, 7-5, 6-1, and at number two Rosenblum was defeated by Lavery, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Kelsey Johnson nearly battled to a three-set win, but was downed by Zoll, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2).
Wilkins and Iyengar rounded out the singles lineup at numbers five and six, but both dropped their matches to Oczkowski and Altholtz, respectively.
The team looks to get back on track against Haverford at home on Wednesday.
