Women's Tennis Blanks Washington College, 9-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (4-2, 3-0 CC) avenged its loss to Washington College in last year's conference semi-finals by blanking the Shorewomen at home on Tuesday. The Garnet is now 3-0 in conference play.
Washington College entered the match with only four players, so the Garnet gained an immediate advantage. The team, however, did not falter in completing the sweep.
At number one doubles, junior Emily Rosenblum (pictured) and sophomore Lia Carlson defeated the team of McNicol/Cohen, 8-3. Sophomore Epiphany English and junior Kelsey Johnson defeated Finnegan/Stevens 8-1 at number two doubles.
In singles, Carlson won her second match for the day at number one, defeating Finnegan by a convincing score of 6-2, 6-0. Rosenblum was also a double winner, earning a victory at number two, 6-1, 6-3.
Sophomore Katie Samuelson and freshman Gayatri Iyengar rounded out the singles lineup for the Garnet, and both won in straight sets. At number five, Samuelson beat Cohen, 6-0, 7-6(3), and Iyengar took down Stevens at number six, 6-3, 6-0.
The women will continue conference play when they face Gettysburg on Saturday away.
