ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (3-1, 2-0 CC) won its second straight conference match, defeating a tough Muhlenberg squad by a score of 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The win was fueled by a sweep of the doubles matches and the double winners for the day, sophomore Lia Carlson and freshman Gayatri Iyengar.
Carlson teamed up with fellow sophomore Katie Samuelson to win a tight set at number one doubles, 9-8 (9-7). Sophomore Brooke Wilkins paired with Iyengar at number two and they won by a convincing score of 8-3 over Goldberg/Contino. At number three doubles, junior Kelsey Johnson and freshman Nadeen Hamza rolled to an 8-2 win over Resnikoff/van Taube.
In singles play, Carlson trounced Sanders at number one, winning 6-1, 6-1, and Iyengar defeated her opponent, Contino, by the same score at number five singles.
Johnson battle at number two singles, but dropped a 1-6, 5-7 decision, and Samuelson lost a close, three-set match to Goldberg, 2-6, 6-0, 1-6.
At number four singles, Wilkins fought against a strong Muhlenberg opponent, but dropped her match in straight sets, 4-6, 2-6. Hamza completed the singles lineup at number six and fell to vanTaube 4-6, 2-6.
The Garnet has two days to prepare for its next match, against non-conference opponent TCNJ on Saturday.
