Women's Tennis Blanks the Green Terror in Conference Opener, 9-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team (2-1, 1-0 CC) opened conference competition with a shutout of McDaniel College (0-2, 0-1 CC) on Sunday. Sophomore Lia Carlson, junior Kelsey Johnson, and freshman Gayatri Iyengar were double winners who did not drop any games in either of their matches.
The Garnet players earned three shutouts in the doubles matches. Carlson and junior Emily Rosenblum earned their shutout at number one doubles over Brittany Starlings and Kierstan Patron. Johnson and Sophomore Epiphany English blanked Pollard/Hamric at number two, and sophomore Brooke Wilkins and Iyengar won 8-0 against Lauren Lewis and Elise O'Meara at number three.
At number one singles, Carlson picked up her second victory over Starlings, 6-0, 6-0 and at number two, Johnson also picked up her second shutout against Hamric.
Playing number three for the Garnet was sophomore Katie Samuelson who earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory against McDaniel's Patron. English fought hard at number four singles and came away with a three-set, 3-6, 6-2, 10-2, win over Pollard.
Rounding out the singles lineup was a pair of freshmen, Iyengar and Nadeen Hamza. Iyengar blanked Lewis in both sets, and Hamza also earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over O'Meara.
The Swarthmore women will continue their conference matches on Wednesday at Muhlenberg. Play is scheduled to begin at 5:00
