Record-Setting Day Once Again for Women's Swimming at Centennial Conference Championships
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - At the end of the second day of Centennial Conference Championship competition, the Swarthmore women's swimming team -- buoyed by the record-shattering performances of freshman Supriya Davis -- finds itself in a close fourth place heading into the final day of the meet.
Davis, a day after breaking the Conference record and winning a gold medal in the 200 IM, wasted no time in following up on Saturday. In the prelims of the 100 butterfly, she swam a blistering 55.95, shattering the school and Conference record, making a NCAA B-cut, and missing an A-cut by a mere 4-100ths. In the finals, she won the event by over two seconds in 56.11, winning her second individual gold of the meet.
Sophomore Margaret Regan (pictured) took home a gold medal for the second year in a row in the 400 IM. Her time of 4:36.87 shattered the school and pool record that she barely missed last year by almost three full seconds, and earned her first individual gold medal of the meet.
The "A" medley relay team of sophomores Regan and Rebecca Teng and freshmen Kate Wiseman and Davis also followed up on its record-breaking performance in the 400 on Friday, winning the 200 in a Conference, school and championship record 1:49.12. For Davis, it was her fourth gold medal of the championships meet, a feat never before accomplished in Swarthmore women's swimming history. It also marked Regan and Wiseman's third gold medals of the meet and Teng's second.
Other notable swims included sophomore Erin Lowe's silver medal in the 100 butterfly (58.80), Wiseman's silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.40) and senior Naomi Glassman's sixth-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:00.74).
The Garnet will look to make a late run at the Championship in the final day of competition tomorrow. Prelims will begin at 10 am, and finals will kick off at 6 pm.
