CHESTER, Pa. - Not even torrential downpours and a swirling wind could deny the Swarthmore College women's soccer team its first victory of the 2011 season.
Braving the elements, the Garnet (1-2) stormed regional non-conference rival Widener (0-2-1) for a dominant 3-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon from Quick Stadium.
After failing to get on the scoreboard in its two season-opening contests at the Messiah Classic, Swat's offense came to life in a big way against the Pride, unleashing a flurry of shots and controlling the play from the opening whistle. In total, the Garnet fired 25 shots forcing Widener keepers Valarie Perretti and Vanessa Hejinas to make a combined nine saves.
The Garnet got on the board in 22nd minute when sophomore Amber Famiglietti opened up the scoring with a strike from 20-yards out. The goal, which was assisted by junior Alexa Ross, was Famiglietti's first of the season, and gave the Garnet a 1-0 lead that held up until halftime
The scoring continued in the second half, with the first career goals from freshmen Emma Sindelar and Amy DiPierro. Sindelar found the back of the net on a touch from outside the six-yard box in the in the 65th minute after a great pass from sophomore Megan Brock. DiPierro's shot found its way into the top left corner of the net in the 75th minute, with junior Mariam Vonderheide being credited with the assist, helping to put the game out of reach.
Along with the offense, a key aspect in the crushing win was the stifling Swarthmore defense. The squad allowed the Pride just two shots on the day - not one on goal - earning its first shutout of the season.
With the win, Swarthmore takes 1-0 lead over Widener in the 2011 edition of the "320 Challenge."
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday against Marywood University. Play is set for 1:00 PM.
