2011 Season Review

2011 Swarthmore Women’s Lacrosse (9-7, 3-6 CC)

Annalise Penikis '13

The women’s lacrosse team made significant strides during the 2011 campaign, nearly advancing to the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time since 2007. Needing to win its two final games of the season to make the postseason, the Garnet rallied to defeat eventual playoff participant Washington College 13-12. In its home finale against Haverford, with a playoff berth hanging in the balance, the Garnet saw a 7-4 second-half lead slip away as the Fords scored five unanswered goals over a 14-minute span.

Annalise Penikis ’12 recorded one of the best all-around individual seasons the program has seen in recent memory, leading the team and the Centennial Conference in goals (63), assists (37), and points (100). By hitting the 100-point mark on her final goal of the season, Penikis became just the fourth player in Swarthmore history and ninth in Centennial Conference history to hit 100 points in a single season. She was named to the Centennial Conference First Team and the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Assn.’s All-Metro Region First Team—the first Swarthmore women's lacrosse player to do so since Kristen English ’01.

Also recognized for her play on the field and in the classroom was defender Maddie Williams ’12, named to the All-Centennial team for the second-consecutive season and honored as the PhillyLacrosse.com Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 26. Other important Garnet contributors were Marie Mutryn ’12 (36 goals, 13 assists), Nicole Vanchieri ’13 (39 ground balls, 37 draw controls) and Corinne Sommi ’14 (37 goals, 23 assists).
