Women's Lacrosse Downed by Muhlenberg 15-7
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore Annalise Penikis and freshman Corinne Sommi each scored two goals, but the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (8-5, 2-4) still ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline as Muhlenberg used a strong first-half run to defeat the Garnet by the score of 15-7 on Wednesday evening.
Senior Emily Evans, junior Marie Mutryn and sophomore Beth Martin also scored for the Garnet while Penikis added two assists to her Centennial Conference-leading total.
A one-two punch of Davin Rosen and Molly Ravin led the Mules (6-6, 2-4) to the Conference victory. The duo combined for 11 of Muhlenberg's 15 goals, with Rosen leading with six and Ravin adding five.
After a Sommi goal at the 19:40 mark put the Garnet down 2-1, the Mules took firm control of the contest by scoring the game's next four goals. The final of three-consecutive goals scored by Ravin herself gave the Mules the 6-1 advantage with 7:07 to play in the half.
Swat fought back into the game, responding with back-to-back goals from Martin and Sommi to cut the margin in half at 6-3 with less than five minutes to play. Still, there was no slowing the Mules' dynamic duo, as Rosen added two more goals down the stretch to give 'Berg an 8-4 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Garnet cut the lead to 9-6 thanks to early goals from Penikis and Evans, but a run of five-straight goals from Mules eventually doomed the Garnet.
In goal for Swat, freshman Michelle Ammerman made seven saves.
The loss puts a damper on the Garnet's Centennial Conference playoff hopes; with the loss, Swat will likely need to win its final three games to have any chance at a playoff berth.
Swarthmore looks to get back on track when it travels to Dickinson on Saturday. Play will begin at 3:00 p.m.
