2011 Women's Lacrosse Season Preview

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - With the addition of nine new players, the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team will certainly have a new look in 2011. Those newcomers combined with return of the squad's top offensive and defensive players gives Garnet fans hope that this new look will result in a new and improved spot in the Centennial Conference standings.

Leading the way for Swat in 2011 will be seniors Emily Evans and Jean Dahlquist. The seniors will be looked upon to provide leadership for a young Garnet squad comprised primarily of underclassmen.

In addition, juniors Marie Mutryn, Annelise Mowry, and Camilla Seirup - who combined to start every game during their sophomores seasons - return with plenty of playing experience. Leading the Garnet attack, Mowry was Swarthmore's leader in goals (36) and points (45) in 2010, while Mutryn wasn't far behind with 33 goals and four points from the midfield.

Junior Maddie Williams will lead the defense after an All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention season in 2010.  Sophomores Beth Martin, Samantha Panepinto, and Nicole Vanchieri will also return to the field after gaining valuable first year experience.

The first year class looks to be one of Swarthmore's strongest in recent memory.  Leading the way will be sophomore Annelise Penikis, a transfer from Lehigh University. She will be joined by Morgan Bartz, Emily Caldwell, Caroline Murphy, Katherine Schultz, Emma Sipperly, Corinne Sommi, and Lucy Whitacre. All will get a chance to contribute immediately and their collective performance could go a long way in determining whether or not the Garnet can compete for a playoff spot.

Sophomore Marjani Nairne and first year Michelle Ammerman will compete for time in the goal, looking to fill the gap left by the graduation of two-year starter Allison Grein.

Swarthmore kicks off the 2011 season on March 5th at home against The College of Notre Dame (Maryland). Immediately following the game the team leaves for a spring break trip to Colorado.  On the trip, Swat will play Colorado College and Wooster before returning to Swarthmore to begin Centennial Conference competition against Ursinus on on March 19.
