Vaqueras Wrangle Women's Basketball in Puerto Rico Trip Finale, 65-53
BAYAMON, P.R. - Closing out its winter break trip in Puerto Rico, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (4-6) got a season-high 17 points from senior Genny Pezzola and 11 points from junior Eliza Polli but ultimately fell to host Puerto Rico-Bayamon 65-53 on Tuesday afternoon.
Pezzola and Polli both got it done from behind the arc, each tallying three three-pointers. Sophomore Katie Lytle put together a solid all-around performance, pulling down 12 rebounds, scoring eight points and dishing out five assists.
Playing on its home court, the Vaqueras got it done from distance, shooting a scorching 70 percent from behind the arc (7-of-10) in the first half to build a 38-28 lead at the intermission. The double-digit deficit would prove too much for the Garnet to overcome, as Puerto Rico-Bayamon prevailed 65-53.
Pezzola also added four steals as part of a Garnet defensive effort that forced 18 Vaquera turnovers.
In in its first game of the Puerto Rico trip on Monday, the Garnet dropped an exhibition contest to Queen's College of Canada 56-43. Polli led the Garnet with 10 points while freshman Elle Larsen added nine points and eight rebounds.
Swarthmore returns home to face Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
