Softball Opens Centennial Play With Split of Dickinson
CARLISLE, Pa. - A solid performance from senior Kathryn Riley on the mound and another superb day at the plate from freshman Danielle Seltzer (two hits, two RBIs) helped the Swarthmore College softball team (8-12, 1-1) take the first game of its Centennial Conference opening twinbill with Dickinson 6-0 on Saturday afternoon. Despite another outstanding pitching performance from Riley (2-4) in the second game, the Garnet lost to Red Devils in game two 1-0 - thanks to a two-out RBI triple from Dickinson's Alesha Sisco in the sixth inning.
Six was the key number in the first half of the doubleheader: Thanks to six hits and six errors from homestanding Dickinson, the Garnet were to push six runs across the plate for the 6-0 win.
Riley picked up her first victory since no-hitting Morrisville State in the season opener - shutting out the Red Devils with seven strike out while scattering.....six hits.
Seltzer led the way for the Garnet at the plate in game 1, finishing with two hits and two runs batted home. The freshman first RBI came on a two-out single in the third inning, giving Swarthmore a 2-0 lead.

An RBI single from junior Melissa Emmerson made it 3-0 game and in the at-bat, the Dickinson right fielder dropped what would have been the third out on a fly from senior Melissa Perch, sending another Swat run home, making it a 4-0 lead.
Following a Riley double in the seventh inning - the Garnet's only extra-base hit of the day - Seltzer delieved again with an RBI single, making it a 5-0 game and providing the final daggar to the Red Devil cause.
An 11-strikeout one-hit shutout from Dickinson starting pitcher Alison Jordan as well as a two-out RBI triple from Alesha Sisco in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Red Devils earned a 1-0 win in the second game.
Freshman Kate Smayda tallied the Garnet's lone hit of the game in the third inning.
Swarthmore returns to CC play on Tuesday, when it hosts Ursinus for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
