Givans, Hammond Set Records at Last Chance Meet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Kenyetta Givans and junior Rebecca Hammond each set school records to highlight the Swarthmore College track & field teams' performances at the Tuppeny Twilight Last Chance Meet on Monday evening.

Givans, one week after setting the school record in the 100 meter hurdles, bested her own mark in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.72, good for third overall in the field. Givans also competed in the 100 meter hurdles, posting a time of 15.01.

Hammond broke her own school record in the 800 meter run, which was set at last year's Last Chance Meet. Hammond crossed the finish line in a record-setting time of 2:12.56, good for eighth place in the field. Hammond must now await word from the NCAA Selection Committee to see if her time is good enough for a return trip to the NCAA Championships.

Senior Stephanie Beebe was right on Hammond's heels in the 800, finishing 13th with a time of 2:16.20, which is a personal best and places her seventh all-time in College history.

In the women's 5,000 meter run, senior Jen Johnson also recorded a personal-best mark, finishing in 17:47.31, good for ninth-place overall in a competitive field and fourth overall in program history. Junior Becky Painter finished 16th in the event (18:29.12).

On the men's side, senior Daniel Ly led the way with a sixth place finish in the triple jump (44-01.25).

Freshman Jonas Oppenheimer led a large Garnet contingent in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.22, just missing a personal best.

Finally in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, senior David D'Annunzio reached a personal best, finishing a time of 10:05.89, which ranks 10th on the all-time list.

Overall, 12 facility records were set at the Last Chance Meet, including in the men's 1500 meter run, where Columbia's Kyle Merber set the American collegiate record for the event (3:35.59).
