Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Southern Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The men's and women's track teams kicked off their 2012 outdoor season at the Southern Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern College over the weekend.
Junior Matthew Heck ran a personal best in the 400 meter dash (49.77) and finished fourth in an impressive field.
He had another best in the 200 meter dash (23.19), finishing 16th out of 56 runners. Freshman Tim Vaughan-Ogunlusi finished 28th in the event, while senior Daniel Ly (pictured) came in 34th place.
The Garnet also performed well in the 800 meter run, as freshmen Erick White and Jonas Oppenheimer finished 12th and 13th, respectively (2:02.32, 2:02.37). Junior Aidan Dumont-McCaffrey placed 29th in the field of 42 (2:10.02).
In the 1500 meter run, sophomores Richard Scott and Dan Kalamarides also finished back-to-back, earning 15th and 16th, respectively (4:17.55, 4:17.57).
Freshman Jason Heo had a top-ten finish in the 400 meter hurdles, placing seventh with a time of 1:00.31.
After narrowly missing a berth to the Division III indoor track and field championships, senior Kenyetta Givans performed well on the weekend, collecting two top 10 finishes. She captured seventh place in the 100 meter hurdles (15.36) and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.30).
Freshman sprinter Ruth Talbot had a strong showing at the invitational, placing 12th out of 41 runners in the 100 meter dash (26.90) and 21st in the 100 meter dash (13.22).
In the 800 meter run, senior Margaret Lenfest finished in 15th place (2:28.18).
Senior Melissa Frick led the way for the Garnet in the 1500 meter run with her 14th place finish (4:52.05). Also performing well in the event were junior Becky Painter (22nd, 5:02.06), senior Hannah Rose (23rd, 5:09.80), and senior Katie Gonzalez (24th, 5:10.50).
In the field, freshman Osazenoriuwa Ebose continued to have success, earning ninth place in the shot put (10.35m) and 15th in the discus throw (30.12m).
The Garnet return to local competition on March 30th and the 31st, when they will compete at the Danny Curran Invitational hosted by Widener University.
