Heck Breaks Indoor Record to Lead Men's Track & Field at Boston Valentine Invitational
BOSTON - Capitalizing on his first and second place finishes last weekend at Haverford, junior Matthew Heck broke the College's 16-year-old indoor record in the 400 meter dash (49.94) to highlight the men's track & field team's performance at the Boston University Valentine Invitational.
The previous indoor mark was held by Mike Turner '96 (50.89). Heck's 400 time ranks third overall (indoor and outdoor) in Swarthmore history. He also ran the 10th fastest all-time 200 meter dash (23.22) to round out an outstanding weekend.
Competing against runners from Divisions I, II, and III, several other members of the Garnet found success at the Valentine Invitational.
Junior Aidan DuMont-McCaffrey (85th/8:49.66) and sophomore Robert Fain (90th/8:51.10) both earned a spot on the Swarthmore's All-Time Top 10 list, with McCaffrey's run placing fifth all-time in the 3000 meter run and Fain's run placing seventh.
Senior Daniel Ly, who also had success in all three of his events last weekend, also beat his long jump distance from last week, finishing 21st with a jump of 43—02.50.
The team now looks ahead to the Haverford Keogh Invitational and the NYU Invitational, both scheduled for next weekend.
