Heck Leads Men's Track & Field at Haverford's Seamus McElligot Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's track and field team had much success at the Seamus McElligot Invitational this weekend at Haverford College. Competitors from all years had strong performances, particularly junior Matthew Heck who placed first and second in his events.

Heck finished first in the 400-meter dash (51.10) -- besting a field of 21-- and second in the 200 Meter Dash (23.50), losing out to Haverford's Sam Callon by just .05 of a second.

Behind him in both events was freshman Tim Vaughan-Ogunlusi, who finished in sixth place in the 400 (54.17) and ninth place in the 200 (23.97).

Four Swarthmore runners broke into the top 20 in the 1-mile run, including freshmen Erik Myers (12th/4:32.97), Jonas Oppenheimer (13th/4:33.91) (pictured), sophomore Robert Fain (16th/4:36.15), and senior Chris Wickham (20th/4:41.36).

A pack of Garnet runners finished in the top ten in the 800 meter run, including junior Cariad Chester (6th/2:04.45), freshman Erick White (7th/2:05.14), sophomore Richard Scott (8th/2:05.23) and senior Henry Ainley (9th/2:05.47).

In the 4x400 meter relay, the Swarthmore 'A' team placed 5th with a time of 3:43.22.

On the field, senior Daniel Ly broke into the top 10 in three of his events, including the long jump (6th/19—00.75), the high jump (5th/4—11.75), and the triple jump (4th/41—05.25). Junior Travis Mattingly placed right behind Ly in the triple jump (5th/37—11.25).

The Swarthmore men have a week to prepare for the Boston University Valentine Invitational, which will kick of next Friday, February 10.
