Men's Tennis Concludes Fall Season With ITA Southeast Regional
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Two members of the Swarthmore College men's tennis team, junior Anthony Collard and sophomore Max Sacks, competed at the ITA Regional tournament held this weekend at the University of Mary Washington. Both players picked up wins in singles and doubles, including a first round victory in the championship singles draw by Collard.
In that first round match, Collard opened strong as he defeated Milanov from Shenandoah, 6-2, 6-0. Collard later fell to the ninth seed, Heaney-Secord from Carnegie Mellon University, 3-6, 1-6.
Sacks rebounded from a first round loss to the ninth seeded, Kumar of Carnegie Mellon, by earning a victory in consolation singles play. He defeated Firtzges from Elizabethtown 8-4, before falling to Wahsington and Lee's Holt in a tight three-set contest, 2-6, 6-4, 4-10.
The men then paired up for the doubles competition, in which they fought for a close match against the fifth-seeded team of Caulfield/Himelstein from Haverford. Haverford took the win 9-8 (7-4) in a tiebreaker. In consolation, however, Collard/Sacks were on the winning end of their first round match, defeating Juniata's Moore/Perow. In the quarterfinals of consolation doubles, Collard/Sacks were defeated by the University of Mary Washington's Blakhin/Lunding-Johansson.
The regional tournament concludes the men's fall season. The team will resume conference action in the spring.
