Sophomores Propel Men's Tennis to Tight Win Over Haverford, 5-4
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomores Max Kaye, Preston Poon and Christian Carcione clinched the Swarthmore men's tennis team's (13-9, 7-2 CC) 5-4 victory over Haverford (10-7, 6-3 CC) on Saturday afternoon on Faulkner Courts.
With the win, the Garnet secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs and will face No. 2 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday in Lancaster.
After falling behind four matches to two through doubles and the first three single matches, Swat came from behind with its wins at number four, five and six singles matches. Senior Max Bressman fought his way to a No. 2 singles victory for the Garnet's first singles win of the day, going 6-2, 7-6 (2) over the Ford's Natty Sergay.
Then the sophomores took control with Kaye getting it started with his 6-1, 6-3 win over the Fords' Andy Dougherty.
Poon rode the momentum in the number five singles match to pick up a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win over Jake Weisenthal.
Already picking up a win at number two doubles, Carcione continued his hot streak with the match-clinching victory at number six singles, downing Will Garrett in close 7-5, 6-3 match.
Carcione and senior Max Kelm won Swarthmore's only double match over Matt Cebul and Matt Romei, 8-2.
Saturday's match in Lancaster against F&M will be played at a time to be determined.
