No. 27 Men's Tennis Clinches Playoff Spot With 9-0 Win Over Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The No. 27 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (12-9, 6-2) secured a spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs with a 9-0 victory over Washington College on Tuesday.
Swarthmore took control of the match early against the No. 11 team in the Atlantic South region, building a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles.Senior Max Bressman and sophomore Max Kaye won 8-6 at No. 1 over the Shoremen's Kevin Papen and Aaron Ellison, sophomore Christian Carcione and senior Zak Kelm (pictured) defeated Marc Cywinski and freshman Vishnu Rajes 8-2 at the No. 2 slot, while sophomore Anthony Collard and freshman Daniel Park defeated Dan Boate and Andrew Laux, 8-4, at No. 3.
The Garnet's success continues right through singles play, as the squad swept the competition to seal the 9-0 win. Kelm won at No. 1 singles over Washington's Papen 7-5, 6-1, Bressman won a hard-fought match over Ellison, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, from the No. 2 spot and Collard sealed the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Wins by Kaye (6-1, 7-5 / No. 4), sophomore Preston Poon (6-0, 6-4 / No. 5) and Carcione (6-0, 6-3 / No. 6) rounded out the singles wins for Swarthmore.
Swat closes out the regular season with its final home meet of the season on Saturday against Haverford.
