SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (11-9, 5-2) split a pair of home matches on Saturday, easily defeating Conference rival Dickinson 9-0 but falling in a tight contest to No. 25 Mary Washington 5-4.
Against the Red Devils in the afternoon tilt, the Garnet dropped only one set while cruising to victory. Senior Zak Kelm, sophomore Anthony Collard, sophomore Max Kaye and sophomore Christian Carcione all double winners in the match.
Swarthmore jumped out to a 3-0 lead after dominating the Devils in the doubles competition, with the teams of Kaye/Bressman (No. 1/8-2), Kelm/Carcione (No. 2/8-2) and Collard/Irving Stone (No. 3/8-4) picking up victories.
Kelm dropped the first set in No. 1 singles against Dickinson's Will Golinkin (2-6), but he rebounded to take the final two sets 6-4 and 18-16.
Collard (6-1, 6-0) , Kaye (6-4, 6-1) and Carcione (6-1, 6-1) all followed with relatively easy wins at singles No. 2 through 4. Closing out the singles sweep, junior Malik Mubeen (6-0, 6-1) and freshman Max Sacks (6-2, 6-1) won at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.
Against Mary Washington in a battle of Top 25 teams, the Garnet jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play, but could not hold off the Eagles, who took four of six singles matches to earn the win.
Senior Max Bressman was Swarthmore's only double-winner of the match, teaming with Kelm to win at No. 1 doubles (8-6) and defeating UMW's Sam Wichlin 6-4, 6-1 in No. 2 singles.
Along with Bressman and Kelm, the No. 3 doubles team of Collard and freshman Daniel Park won 9-7 to put the Garnet ahead 2-1 following the competition.
Despite the early lead, things would go downhill for Swat in singles play. Along with Bressman, sophomore Preston Poon picked up a singles win - No. 5 over UMW's Will Apperson 7-5, 6-2 - but the Eagles captured singles No. 1,3,4 and 6 to claim the win.
