No. 20 Men's Tennis Sweeps Ursinus in Centennial Opener
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The No. 20 Swarthmore College men's tennis team (6-6, 1-0) made quick work of homestanding Ursinus (7-3, 0-1) in its Centennial Conference opener, defeating the Bears 9-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The Swarthmore men did not drop a set all afternoon, as senior Zak Kelm, senior Max Bressman, junior Malik Mubeen, junior James Wieler (pictured), sophomore Preston Poon and sophomore Christian Carcione were all easy winners in the singles competition.
In doubles play, the Garnet's dominating afternoon kicked off with three convincing victories. Kelm and Bressman teamed up at No. 1 to defeat the Bears' Evan Stutchin/Evan Lord 8-5, Carcione and freshman Irving Stone won at No. 2 8-6 over Ursinus' Matt Hope/Dylan Marsh, and Poon and Wieler paired up to make it a clean sweep at the No. 3 slot (8-3).
Swarthmore returns home Saturday to host No. 4 Johns Hopkins in one of the most anticipated match-ups in the Centennial Conference and Atlantic South Region. Play is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
