Men's Tennis Drops Pair to No. 15 Redlands, Vanguard
REDLANDS, Calif. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team faced tough competition in the University of Redlands and Vanguard, dropping a pair of matches (6-3 and 9-0) in California on Wednesday.
Against Redlands, the Garnet players split their singles matches, but the doubles points proved to be key in determining the outcome.
In singles play, Senior Max Bressman won his match at number three in three difficult sets, defeating Bloom 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Sophomore Max Kaye also picked up a win at number fours singles, handing Dahl a 6-4, 6-2 loss. Sophomore Daniel Park also won his singles match at number six in three close sets. He defeated Redlands' Jones 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
The University of Redlands' Lipscomb defeated sophomore Zak Kelm 6-3, 6-4 at number one singles, and Cummins defeated sophomore Anthony Collard at number two singles, 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Preston Poon dropped a close, three-set decision to Nanda, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
Taking to the court for doubles, the Garnet did not find the same success against three solid teams from the University of Redlands. Bressman/Kelm lost at number one doubles to Bloom/Lipscomb, 8-3, Collard/Kaye were defeated by Cummins/Hyde, 8-5, and Leahy/Nanda, 8-5, defeated Park and freshman Irving Stone at number three doubles.
In its next match, a strong team from Vanguard University outplayed the Garnet, winning all nine matches.
Freshman Max Sacks started one for the team, but was blanked by Pereira. Junior James Wieler started two, but fell to Roger Muri, 6-2, 6-2, and sophomore Christian Carcione lost in two close sets, 6-2, 7-6 (3) at number three singles.
Rounding out the singles lineup were freshman Carl DeFranco at four, who lost to Wagner, 6-1, 6-0, junior Malik Mubeen at number five, who nearly battled to a three set win, but ultimately lost, 6-7(1), 6-3, 10-7, and junior Sam Clark at number six, who fell to Rosiak, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, junior Seth Udelson teamed up with Carcione at number one, but lost to Kryvaruchka/Muri, 8-2. Pereira/Rosiak defeated Wieler/Sacks at number two doubles, 8-3, and Mubeen and freshman Harrison Lands lost at number three doubles, 8-2.
The Swarthmore men continue spring break action today against Caltech and Claremont-McKenna State, and play their final match tomorrow against Pomona-Pitzer.
