Peter Maxted Named to 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Soccer First Team

TOWSON, Md. - Peter Maxted '14 of the Swarthmore College men's soccer team has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Soccer First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.

An economics major and math/computer science minor from Port Washington, N.Y., Maxted  is the 14th Swarthmore student-athlete named Academic All-American since the program began in 1987. He is just the eighth first-team selection in program history and the fourth all-time selection from the men's soccer program.  The last Garnet athlete named to the first team was David D'Annunzio '12, who was named to the men's soccer first team last season.

A goalkeeper in his first full season as a starter, Maxted won the starting job early in the season and never looked back, recording seven shutouts and allowing just 10 goals all season for an .861 save percentage and a 0.54 goals-against average. Maxted's goals-against average ranks fourth in program history for a single-season.

With Maxted between the pipes, the Garnet finished the season 16-3-2, reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 round for the third time in five seasons.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
