Men's Lax Downs Muhlenberg, 9-6
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Daniel Kowalyshyn scored three goals and seniors Zach Belden and Max Hubbard each netted a pair as the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team (4-3, 1-1) defeated Muhlenberg 9-6 to earn its first Centennial Conference victory of the year on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Jonathan Molloy and freshman Ian Lukaszewicz also scored for the Garnet, which has already equaled its win total for the entire 2011 season.
Senior Michael Brockway had a big day in net, making 14 saves - including five huge stops in the fourth quarter.
The defense as a whole played some of its best lacrosse of the entire season, limiting the Mules (2-6, 0-2) to just one second-half goal on 19 shots. Sophomore Geli Carabases (pictured) led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Steve Selverian finished with four ground balls and won 6-of-12 faceoffs.
Swat started strong out of the gate, jumping to a 4-2 lead after the first period following two goals from Belden and strikes from Molloy and Kowalyshyn.
In the second period, Hubbard provided all of the scoring for the Garnet, netting two goals from long distance. Still, the Mules found their own offensive rhythm , scoring three goals in the period -- including two in the final four minutes -- to make it a 6-5 game heading into the break.
In the third period, Swarthmore's defense began to take over the game. Despite facing 11 shots, the Swat defense held firm, keeping the Muhlenberg offense off the scoreboard for the entire period. Kowalyshyn's second of the game with 2:13 left in the period gave the Garnet a 7-5 heading into the fourth period.
The Mules kept it interesting down the stretch, but the Garnet would not be denied. After a Muhlenberg man-up goal made it an 8-6 game with six minutes to go, Swarthmore sealed the game with three minutes to play when Belden found Lukaszewicz open in front of the net for the score.
Hubbard finished the game with a team-high five ground balls while senior Michael Girardi added two caused turnovers for the defense.
For Muhlenberg, Jon Thomas led the offense with three goals.
Swarthmore returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Whittier at 1:00 pm from Clothier Field.
