Gwynedd-Mercy Gets By Field Hockey, 3-2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Nia Jones and freshman Beth Johnson each tallied goals for the Swarthmore College field hockey team (4-7, 2-4), but it wasn't enough to push the Garnet past visiting Gwynedd-Mercy as Swarthmore fell to the Griffins by the score of 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Down 3-1 in the final three minutes, Johnson connected off an excellent pass from junior Katie Teleky in front of the goal to cut the deficit to 3-2, sparking a late Swarthmore rally. With possession for much of the remaining three minutes of play, Swarthmore had its fair share of chances - including three penalty corners in the last two minutes - but could not find the equalizer.

Maria Karidas scored two goals for the Griffins while Brooke Stretch also added a score. With the win, Gwynedd-Mercy moved to 10-3 on the season.

Down 1-0 in the final two minutes of the first half, Jones tied the game with her team-leading seventh goal of the season. The goal came as a result of  quite an individual effort for Jones, as she juked out her defender on the far right wing then chipped the ball over the Griffins' goalkeeper from a near-impossible angle.

With the score 1-1 heading into the second half, Gwynedd-Mercy wasted no time taking back the lead, as Stretch scored in the 37th minute to make it 2-1. The Griffins then added the eventual game-winner off the stick of Karidas in the 61st minute.

In goal for the Garnet, sophomore Gabby Capone made 13 saves. Sophomore Anne Rosenblatt added a defensive save.

The Griffins finished with a 22-10 edge in shots while the Garnet held the advantage in corners (10-5).

Swarthmore remains out of conference with a match-up at Immaculata on Thursday. Play is set for 4:00 p.m.
