Rutgers-Camden Downs Swat Baseball, 9-5
CAMDEN, N.J. - A four-run eighth inning pushed the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors past the Swarthmore College baseball team by a score of 9-5 on Monday evening from Campbell's Park.
Senior second baseman Anthony Montalbano, senior third baseman Mike Waterhouse, and junior leftfielder Sean Bryant (pictured) each picked up two hits to lead the Garnet attack. Bryant finished the contest with a triple, double and sac fly.
The Garnet fell behind 5-1 going into the sixth, the one run coming on a fifth-inning double by senior Sam Menzin. In the top of the sixth, Swarthmore rallied with a Waterhouse RBI single and a two-out, two-run hit by freshman outfielder Zach Powell, closing the deficit to 5-4.
In the top of the eighth, with the score still 5-4, sophomore first baseman Nicko Burnett earned a one-out hit and Waterhouse doubled him to third, setting up Bryant to drive in the game-tying run with a sac fly.
The Raptors, however, answered in the bottom of the inning off of junior reliever Sean Mangus. Leading the way for the Scarlet Raptors was senior Jon Siswo. He drilled a three-run tie-breaking double in the bottom of the eighth inning, stole third base and continued around to score on the catcher's throwing error to spark the Raptors' deciding four-run rally. He finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs and four RBIs. At the end of the eighth, Rutgers-Camden found itself ahead by the game's 9-5 final.
Freshman starter Dylan Jeffers struggled through four and two thirds, allowing five runs on 11 hits.
The Garnet will close out the 2012 regular season on Saturday with a trip to Dickinson for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:30 pm.
