Baseball Pounds Muhlenberg 12-5; Kwilos Sets RBI Mark
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Led by the record-breaking offensive performance from junior rightfielder Tim Kwilos, the Swarthmore College baseball team (18-10, 4-6) continued its slump-busting with a 12-5 win over the Muhlenberg Mules on Friday in Allentown.
The win, propelled by a six-run eighth inning, gave the Garnet a series and season sweep of the Mules (18-14, 2-8).
Kwilos (pictured) went 2-for-3 with five runs batted in, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning. He now has 40 RBIs on the season, which breaks the Swarthmore single-season record (38) set by Spencer Ross '12 and Jimmy Gill '10 in 2010. His .440 batting average is the highest among Garnet batters, and his four home runs are tied with sophomore Nicko Burnett for the team lead. Kwilos also currently leads the Centennial Conference in RBI,
Senior second baseman Anthony Montalbano earned a pair of hits and 3 RBIs, and Burnett and senior catcher Miles Santo also picked up two hits each.
Swarthmore jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first on a Kwilos single, and two in the second on a Santo double and a Montalbano single. Taking advantage of defensive miscues to tack on another pair of runs in the fourth, the Garnet hit the halfway point of the game with a 5-0 lead.
Although Kwilos knocked in the Garnet's sixth run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, Muhlenberg rallied with two in the sixth and three in the seventh, and entering the eighth Swarthmore's lead had been cut to 6-5.
The Garnet, however, would score six times in the eighth to break the game open. Freshman left fielder Trevor Shepherd stared the scoring with an RBI groundout, and Montalbano doubled home another run. A pair of errors brought a third run across before Kwilos capped the scoring with his two-out, three-run blast to left.
Senior starter Zach Weiner fought through 6.2 innings, earning the win despite nine hits and five runs allowed. Senior Adam Hardy closed the game out with two and a third scoreless.
The Garnet will return home tomorrow to take on the McDaniel Green Terror in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:30 pm.
