Haverford Handles Baseball, 9-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - An uncharacteristic lack of offense doomed the Swarthmore College baseball team (15-5, 1-1) on Friday afternoon, as the Garnet's three-game winning streak came to an end with a 9-1 loss to Centennial Conference rival Haverford.

Freshman shortstop Danny McMahon was the only Garnet batter with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 and driving in Swarthmore's lone run. Freshman catcher Joe Rizzo, junior right fielder Tim Kwilos, and senior third baseman Mike Waterhouse each recorded one hit. Kwilos also saved an early run with a dazzling catch to end the third inning.

Senior starter Kyle Crawford (4-1) was better than his final line, as he pitched seven strong innings before the wheels fell off in the eighth.

Nursing a 2-0 lead into the top of the inning, Haverford took advantage of three key Garnet errors to blow the game open with seven runs (three earned) on Crawford and relievers Adam Hardy and Sean Mangus. Sophomore Matt Bertuch finished the game with a scoreless inning and two thirds.

Haverford starter Tommy Bergjens kept Swarthmore off balance all afternoon, striking out 10 over seven frames.

Swarthmore will look to get back on a winning track tomorrow, as they travel to Gettysburg for a doubleheader with the Bullets. First pitch is set for 12:30.
