Kwilos and Company Tame the Griffins, 7-3
GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Junior Tim Kwilos was a home run shy of hitting the cycle on Tuesday afternoon, going three-for-four with a single, double and triple along with three RBI and a run to lead the Swarthmore baseball team (13-4) to a 7-3 non-conference victory over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins (8-6).
Kwilos knocked in three runs and scored one over the 7th and 8th innings. He put the Garnet on top for the first time with a two-RBI triple in the seventh inning and followed that up in the 8th with an RBI double to tally Swat's 7th and final run.
Eight of Swarthmore's nine starters recorded a hit in the game including four batters with two hits and Kwilos with three. Nicko Burnett continued his already impressive sophomore campaign, going two-for-four including a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Senior catcher Mike Waterhouse, senior designated hitter Miles Santo, and freshman shortstop Danny McMahon also recorded multiple hits.
Senior Ignacio Rodriguez, after getting knocked around in his last few starts, returned to the form that made him Swarthmore's ace last season, allowing three earned runs and striking out eight over 7 innings.
The Griffins took a 2-0 lead early in the game, scratching out a run in the second and another in the third before Swarthmore took control. McMahon doubled in a run in the fourth to put the Garnet on the board; the score would remain 2-1 until the seventh inning, when Kwilos tripled home two to give Swarthmore a 3-2 lead. Junior centerfielder Rory McTear added a sac fly in the inning.
In the 8th, the Garnet put together a 2-out rally as three successive singles and an error plated Swarthmore's fifth run. Kwilos would double to bring home two more, bringing the Garnet's final tally to seven.
Junior pitcher Zach Weiner relieved Rodriguez in the bottom of the 8th, allowing an inherited runner to score but closing the door on Swarthmore's win.
The Garnet returns to action on Monday, taking on Keuka College at Clothier Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
