Baseball Blanks Penn State-Abington, 8-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - A dominating outing from senior right-hander Zach Weiner headlined a day full of highlights for the Swarthmore baseball team (11-2) on Tuesday, as the Garnet dominated the PSU-Abington Nittany Lions (4-7) by an 8-0 score. The win was Swarthmore's 9th in a row, as the team stayed in fine form after returning from an undefeated spring break trip.
Weiner threw eight shutout innings, scattering three hits (all singles) and striking out seven. The win was his third of the young season, tied for the team lead.
The Garnet offense, after putting up impressive numbers over spring break, took advantage of four PSU errors and a total of nine walks handed out by six opposing pitchers. In the first inning, Swarthmore capitalized on a pair of two-out errors to push across the first run of the game on a walk.
In the fourth inning, a walk and an error set up a two-run single by freshman catcher Joe Rizzo, and, in the fifth, the Garnet stretched the lead to 5-0 on a 2-RBI base hit by junior centerfielder Rory McTear.
Seventh inning hits by Rizzo and senior first baseman Spencer Ross, in addition to two more walks and another error, capped Swarthmore's scoring on the afternoon.
Senior Adam Hardy threw a scoreless ninth inning, pitching around a two-out hit to nail down the victory.
Swarthmore travels to face 320 rival Widener tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
