Baseball Remains Unbeaten on Spring Break Trip With Wins Over St. John's, Presentation

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Swarthmore baseball remained perfect in Arizona on Thursday, sweeping yet another doubleheader, 12-9 over St. John's (Minn.) and 6-1 over Presentation. With the wins, the Garnet's spring break record stands at 6-0 and 8-2 overall.

In Game 1, St. John's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off of senior starter Ignacio Rodriguez; in the top of the second, the Garnet answered quickly, if unconventionally. Swarthmore scored five times in the inning, but picked up only one hit (a single by senior designated hitter Mike Cameron), drawing four walks and getting hit by two pitches.

In the fourth, with the score 5-4 Swarthmore, the Garnet added two runs to their lead without the benefit of a hit, courtesy of three errors by St. John's shortstop. In the eighth, senior catcher Mike Waterhouse's two-run triple led the team to another five-run inning, stretching the lead to 12-5.

St. John's attempted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four times off Rodriguez and senior Adam Hardy, but junior Sean Mangus' scoreless ninth sealed the win for Swarthmore.

Dramatics were kept to a minimum in Game 2 against Presentation, as Swarthmore rode a 5-run third inning to an easy victory. With the game tied at 1 going into the inning, senior second baseman Anthony Montalbano tripled and scored on Burnett's groundout to put the Garnet ahead; junior outfielders Tim Kwilos and Rory McTear both recorded RBI doubles in the inning, and junior designated hitter Bryce Codell plated two with a single.

Freshman Dylan Jeffers pitched six innings of three-hit ball for the first win of his collegiate career. Sophomore Matt Bertuch threw two scoreless frames in relief, and freshman Luke Alventosa worked around a walk to close out the game.

Swarthmore concludes its spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Pitt-Bradford. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm EST.
