SWARTHMORE, Pa.–A base running miscue provided a wild ending to a long day of ball as the Swarthmore College baseball team picked up a split with the visiting Dickinson College Red Devils on Saturday, April 8. Swarthmore fell 14-8 in game one before rallying for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
With the bases loaded, two outs and a 6-4 score in game two, a pitch in the dirt caused a Dickinson base runner to head toward home before retreating back to third. His stumble allowed
Kenji Yoshii to fire the ball to third baseman
Wesley Fishburn for the tag and game-ending out.
Ryan Warm allowed just one earned run in eight innings to pick up the win and
James Rutledge secured his first save of the season after entering the ninth with the bases loaded.
Charles Levitt drove in a pair of runs as did
Wesley Fishburn, who blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
In game one, the Red Devils took advantage of four home runs as they amassed a 14-1 lead by the eighth inning. The Garnet reserves showed resolve and ended up scoring seven runs in the final two frames to provide the final score.
Cal Barnett-Mayotte recorded three RBIs while
Jackson Roberts plated a pair as well.
The nightcap went the way of the Garnet with Swarthmore scoring four runs in the third.
Jaron Shrock started things with a walk and reached second after
Ryan Burnett singled.
AJ Liu walked to load the bases and Levitt drove in two on a single to right. A catcher's interference allowed another run to score and Levitt completed the scoring as
Cole Beeker reached on a fielder's choice.
Fishburn went yard in the fifth with Liu on the base path for Swarthmore's sixth unanswered run. The Red Devils trailed by five entering the final frame, but made the game interesting by loading the bases with one out. Dickinson would score three and threatened to overtake Swarthmore before the inopportune stumble ended the evening.
Prior to the game, Swarthmore dedicated its newly constructed press box and grandstand to Ernie Prudente, a member of the Garnet Athletics Hall of Fame. The ceremony can be watched online at the Swarthmore Athletics YouTube page.
