SWARTHMORE, Pa.-Amy Vachal '11, an alumna who played both women's soccer and women's lacrosse while at Swarthmore, is taking her talents to another competition: singing on NBC's "The Voice."
Vachal earned an audition in front of-actually, behind the chairs of-coaches Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton of "The Voice" which airs
Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. "The Voice," a reality singing competition on NBC, has contestants perform a blind audition where the coaches only listen to the artist's performance. From there, the coaches can offer to work with the artist who then has the choice of which coach to team up with. Artists that advance past the audition stage work towards the grand prize of earning a recording contract.
Swarthmore Women's Soccer head coach
Todd Anckaitis remembers noticing Vachal's artistic talent and mentioned that when he heard her cover of Billy Joel's "The Longest Time" he knew her music could take her places. "She later gave me her first CD of original music, and I was blown away," Anckaitis said. "She is also a great artist and painter. In fact, she did a piece of art that still hangs over my couch at home."
Vachal received All-Centennial Conference honors as a women's lacrosse player while at Swarthmore. Her head coach
Karen Borbee recalled Vachal making an immediate impact on the team. "She was a talented athlete who could run the midfield forever, be a constant threat to score, and was a solid and poised defender," Borbee said.
Borbee added that like so many Swarthmore student-athletes, Vachal has many talents that extend beyond the playing field. "I am so proud that she followed her dream with her beautiful voice and has found success," she said. "Amy has left her mark on our women's lacrosse program as both a student-athlete and now as an accomplished artist."
"Whether she wins the season or is off on the first episode, there is no question this woman is talented," Anckaitis added. "I know a lot goes into the competition, but I wouldn't be surprised if she wins the whole thing."
Tune in to NBC at 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights to watch Vachal perform in the premiere of the ninth season of "The Voice."
Note: Vachal's audition was pre-recorded and will air at NBC's discretion. We are unsure of the exact date and time it will be displayed.
