Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team remained undefeated by securing a 1-0 victory against Rowan University on Monday, Sept. 8 at the Rowan Soccer Field. The match was rescheduled from Saturday due to thunderstorms.
After a scoreless first half that featured a Rowan goal called back for offside, a yellow card to a Rowan player, and a flurry of long throw-ins and free kicks for the hosts, the Garnet settled in to dominate the early parts of the second half. Limiting the Profs to less possession and fewer set piece opportunities, the visitors began to find rhythm in the middle of the field, threatening the Rowan goal on a handful of occasions in the second half. Despite the limited opportunity, the hosts had another potential goal called back for offside.
In the 80th minute, senior
Michael Stewart landed the first and only goal of the match when his free kick was deflected into the lower right corner of the net of the net by a player in Rowan's defensive wall. The deflection caught Rowan goalkeeper Kevin Vasta leaning the wrong way.
Another flurry of chances in the dying moments of the match - highlighted by a point-blank save on the doorstep by junior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon - failed to produce an equalizer for Rowan and allowed Swarthmore to leave the field with a hard-fought road win.
Zon helped keep the team's winning streak alive by recording his third shutout and saving five shots, including a header in the 90th minute attempted by Rowan freshman Silas Wood. The Garnet have not allowed a goal yet this season. Vasta of Rowan (1-3) turned away four shots in the losing effort.
Swarthmore (3-0) hopes to remain undefeated when it visits Widener University on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
