19th-Ranked Men’s Soccer Wins Centennial Opener Over Johns Hopkins, 1-0, to Remain Undefeated

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Geoff Stewart found the back of the net for the first time this season to help lead the Swarthmore men's soccer team (5-0-2, CC 1-0) to a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins (2-4-1, CC 0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Clothier Field in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools.

The first half was marked by physicality on both sides and featured a strong offensive effort by the Garnet, which outshot the Blue Jays, 7-3, and won the majority of possession to set the tempo of play. Blue Jay freshman goalkeeper Matt Paris, however, made his presence known and swallowed up all attempts in and around the goal mouth to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0 going into the break.

The Garnet finally broke through just 13 minutes into the second half when Stewart struck gold. The junior turned on a bouncing ball yards beyond the box and unleashed a firecracker that sailed just under the center of the crossbar. Senior Noah Sterngold recorded the assist on the lone score of the match.

The Blue Jays' best moment came in the waning moments of play when striker Samy Ramadane fired a shot that skimmed the crossbar and nearly knotted up the score. The crowd was momentarily silent until Garnet senior goalkeeper Peter Maxted retrieved the ball for a goal kick, and the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards.

Maxted, who organized a stalwart Garnet defense that yielded only seven shots, recorded one save to earn the shutout for Swarthmore. Paris of Johns Hopkins would finish with five saves on the day.

The Garnet remain undefeated and will look to build on their streak of success when they continue conference play at Ursinus. The match is slated for Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
