Michael Stewart recorded one goal and added a career-high three assists in leading the #15 Swarthmore men's soccer team to a 6-0 rout of Penn State Altoona on Saturday, Aug. 31 in the 15th Annual Garnet Alumni Classic at Clothier Field.
Stewart set up the Garnet's first two goals before punching in the team's third tally to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 advantage less than 20 minutes into the match.
Devon Baughen netted his first goal of the season just 1:47 into the contest before
Joe Keedy finished a pass from the junior in the 15th minute to double the lead. Stewart then finished a short pass from Keedy to give Swarthmore the three-goal advantage in the 19th minute, and
Billy Evers netted his first career goal shortly before halftime to give the hosts a 4-0 cushion at the break.
Swarthmore (1-0) continued to dominate offensively and added two more goals in the second half. Stewart, who racked up 30 points on 14 goals and two assists last season, added his third helper of the match in the 54th minute when he rocketed a shot off the pipe that was collected by Baughen and sent past goalkeeper Aaron Ballish.
Michael Superdock closed out the scoring by tallying his first career goal 11 minutes later.
Peter Maxted earned the start for the Garnet and earned the victory after making one stop in the first half. He was replaced by
Tyler Zon, who did not have to make a save over the final 45 minutes. Ballish of Penn State Altoona (0-2) suffered the loss after turning away eight of the 25 shots he faced.
Swarthmore, which is ranked 15th nationally by the NSCAA, wraps up tournament play when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
