Garnet Sports Weekly Update: February 11
Men’s Basketball
Swarthmore 73, Franklin & Marshall 63 (OT) (Feb. 9)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In front of a packed Tarble Pavilion, the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (6-17 5-11) put together its finest performance of the 2012-13 season, knocking off first-place Franklin & Marshall by a score of 73-63 in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Junior Joe Keedy was unstoppable in the paint, tying a career-high with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 shooting at the free-throw line. Junior Jay Kober finished with 17 points, including a crucial tip-in off a Keedy missed free throw at the start of overtime. Senior Will Gates scored 16 points and junior Jordan Federer added 11 points, with the duo combining to score nine of the Garnet's 14 points in overtime. The Garnet gave its seniors - Gates, Andrew Greenblatt, Jordan Martinez and Eugene Prymak - the ultimate sendoff, earning the program's first win over Franklin & Marshall since Jan. 13, 2007.
Washington College 72, Swarthmore 70 (OT) (Feb. 6)
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - It was a cruel overtime defeat for the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (5-17, 4-11) as Washington College's Sean Flanigan air-balled a three-point attempt in waning seconds of a tie game, only to see his teammate Sean Brooks catch the offensive rebound under the basket and lay in the game-winning bucket at the buzzer, giving the Shoremen (3-19, 3-12) a 72-70 victory over the Garnet on Wednesday evening. Swarthmore was led by juniors Joe Keedy and Jay Kober, each of whom finished with a double-double. Keedy scored a career-high 23 points - including the Garnet's final seven points of regulation - while pulling down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Kober recorded 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Women’s Basketball
Swarthmore 74, Franklin & Marshall 68 (Feb. 9)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Led by three double-figure scorers, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team defeated Franklin & Marshall 74-68 on Saturday afternoon from Tarble Pavilion. Swarthmore (18-5, 14-4) honored its two graduating seniors Madeline Ross and Eliza Polli before the tip-off with the Diplomats (7-16, 4-14). The Garnet offense was led by sophomore Elle Larsen with 20 points – 10 of which came from the free throw line. Junior Katie Lytle finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season. The seniors combined for 16 points - Ross tallied 10 points, three assists, one block and one steal, while Polli finished with six points and four rebounds.
Swarthmore 65, Washington College 58 (Feb. 6)
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (17-5, 13-4) made history with its 66-58 win over Washington College (10-12, 8-9) on Wednesday evening, clinching a spot in the Centennial Conference Playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign. The Garnet was led by sophomore Elle Larsen's 23 points – matching her career-high - and 12 rebounds in addition to three blocks and three assists. Senior Madeline Ross also fueled Swarthmore's offense, adding 17 points in her return to the starting lineup. Junior Kayla Moritzky added 11 points for the Garnet. Larsen scored 16 of her 23 points in the second half, and junior Katie Lytle added 10 rebounds for the Garnet in the clinching game.
McDaniel 66, Swarthmore 52 (Feb. 4)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Three players reached double-digits to lead the visiting McDaniel College to a 66-52 victory over the Swarthmore College women's basketball team on Monday night from Tarble Pavilion. Junior Katie Lytle collected her tenth consecutive double-double (15 points and 16 rebounds) to match the program record set by Kathryn Stockbower '10 during the 2009-10 season. Lytle now has 15 double-doubles on the season for the Garnet (16-5, 12-4). She devoured a season-high eight offensive boards in addition to four assists and two steals. Elle Larsen added a game-high 17 points, while Kayla Moritzky tallied five assists, seven points and three steals.
Women's Basketball Ranked No. 4 in Mid-Atlantic Region (Feb. 7)
INDIANAPOLIS, In. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (17-5, 13-4) is ranked No. 4 in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the NCAA's first regional rankings of the season, which were released late Wednesday evening. The Garnet - which secured a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs with a victory over Washington College last evening - comes in behind No. 1 Messiah, No. 2 FDU-Florham and No. 3 Moravian. Behind the play of junior Katie Lytle (15.0 ppg/11.7 rpg) and sophomore Elle Larsen (13.1 ppg/7.5 rpg), the women's basketball team is in the midst of the program's best season in over a decade.
Men’s Swimming
Swarthmore 111, Dickinson 94 (Feb. 9)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The last meet of the season before the Centennial Conference Championships was a battle from beginning to end, but the Swarthmore College men's swim team ultimately emerged victorious over the Dickinson Red Devils on Saturday by a score of 111-94. The meet was preceded by Senior Day ceremonies, as Roger Chin, Daniel Duncan, Charlie Hepper, Nathaniel Lo, Patrick Monari, Josh Satre, Nick Sohn, and Lucas Zullo all swam in their final competition at Ware Pool. The Garnet men won largely on depth, taking first in only four individual events. Satre was the team's only multiple-winner, taking both the 1000 (10:10.84) and 500 (5:00.22) freestyles. Duncan recorded a win in the 200 freestyle (1:47.33), while junior John Flaherty took first in the 200 IM (2:02.48).
Women’s Swimming
Dickinson 104, Swarthmore 101 (Feb. 9)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In the last meet of the season before the Centennial Conference Championships, the Swarthmore College women's swim team fought to the finish before falling to the Dickinson Red Devils on Saturday by a 104-101 score. The meet was preceded by Senior Day ceremonies, as Hannah Gotwals, Emily MacDuffie, Katie Schultz, Chloe Stevens, and Alice Wong all swam in their final competition at Ware Pool. Despite being outmatched on overall depth, the usual suspects kept the Garnet in the hunt throughout the meet. Four of Swarthmore's five individual wins came from the dynamic sophomore duo of Supriya Davis and Kate Wiseman, who won two events each; Davis dominated both the 200 freestyle (1:56.59) and the 200 butterfly (2:09.53) in season-bests, and Wiseman took both sprint freestyle events (25.13 and 54.20). Freshman Eva Winter provided the Garnet's fifth win, touching first in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.27).

Lafayette/Rider Winter Games (Feb. 8)
NEW YORK, NY. - The Swarthmore College men's track and field team competed at the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games Invitational on Friday afternoon. Senior Jacob Phillips highlighted the Garnet performances with a career-best 8:46.59 finish in the 3,000-meter run to take fifth-place. Shedding almost six seconds off his previous time, the new mark stands as the program's fourth-best. Senior Matthew Heck, competing in two events, clocked 23.62 (200M) and 51.76 (400M) and sophomore Erick White finished the 800-meter run at a 2:00.97 pace.

Lafayette/Rider Winter Games (Feb. 8)
NEW YORK, NY - The Swarthmore College women's track and field team competed at the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games Invitational on Friday afternoon. Finishing third overall, senior Rebecca Hammond secured an ECAC-qualifying spot after clocking 2:17.36 in the 800-meter run. Freshman Katie McMenamin ran a 5:13.94 mile to finish in sixth-place and senior Becky Painter paced the 3,000-meter in 10:26.56 for fourth-place and is just shy of her personal-best mark.

Women's Basketball Set to Host Play 4Kay Game
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team will host Tri-Co rival Bryn Mawr College in its annual Play 4Kay initiative game on Wednesday, February 13. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Tarble Pavilion. All Garnet fans attending the game are encouraged to wear pink. The Garnet women's basketball team will be selling Play 4Kay t-shirts and pins in the lobby of Tarble Pavilion throughout the contest. T-shirts will be sold for $10 to Swarthmore students and $15 to all non-students and pins will be for sale for $2. The proceeds will benefit The Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Garnet Feature Friday - GSN Student-Athlete Profile of Daniel Duncan '13
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The first edition of the GSN Student-Athlete Spotlight features Daniel Duncan of the men's swimming team. Daniel is a four-time Centennial Conference medalist, a three-time member of the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and is a huge fan of chocolate chips.
Men's Soccer Hosts 10th Annual Charity Youth Soccer Clinic (Feb. 8)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team hosted the 10th Annual Charity Youth Soccer Clinic on Sunday, February 3rd, 2013. This year's event - the proceeds of which go to benefit the Chester Garden Project - raised over $500 in donations from the attendees. In addition to learning basic skills, such as passing, dribbling, and juggling, the children played small-sided matches against each other – and against the #14-ranked Garnet - during the clinic. Over 30 boys and girls, ages 5-14, attended this year's event, which included a brief overview of the Chester Garden Project from some of the current Swarthmore College students involved in the effort.

Garnet Athletics Player of the Week Joe Keedy (Jr., Petoskey, Mich. / Petoskey)
Keedy had a career week for the Garnet, averaging 23 points per game and eight rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field in a 1-1 week. He scored a career-high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season in an overtime loss to Washington College. He matched that career high just three days later, leading the Garnet to an upset win over first-place Franklin & Marshall.
Garnet Athletics Did You Know? With its two overtime games last week, Garnet men’s basketball has played in a remarkable five overtime contests this season, all in conference play. The Garnet are 2-3 in those games.
