Swat Spotlight: Men's Tennis Coach Mike Mullan Presents at Third Annual Conference on Sport & Society
LONDON - Head Men's Tennis Coach and Professor
of Sociology Mike Mullan presented a paper at the Third Annual
Conference on Sport & Society, which was held at Cambridge
University early last week.
Mullan’s paper, Sport, Cultural Nationalism, and the
Creation of a Plebian Public Sphere: Gaelic Sport among the Irish
of Philadelphia, 1890-1924, discussed how the Irish-American
community in Philadelphia prepared to add sport to its existing
platform of Celtic identity in the 1890s.
The International Conference on Sport and Society is held annually
in different locations around the world in association with
significant sporting events. The inaugural conference was held at
the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada just after
the Winter Olympics in 2010; the second in Kolkata, India in 2011
at the time of the cricket world cup; and at Cambridge University
in the United Kingdom for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Mullan is returning for his 36th season as head coach of the Garnet men’s tennis program. The 1986 NCAA Division III Coach of the Year, Mullan has led the Garnet to 27 appearances at the NCAA Division III National Championships, including three national titles (1981, '85, '90).
