Garnet Feature Friday: 1997-98 Women's Track & Field
Swarthmoreathletics.com is proud to present Garnet Feature Friday, a series that will highlight past Garnet teams, notable Garnet alumni, and current student-athletes. This week, we take a look back at the 1997-98 Women's Track & Field Team, which captured the 1998 Centennial Conference Indoor Championship and produced some of the school's top female athletes.
The 1997-98 Swarthmore College women’s track and field team captured its second straight indoor Centennial Conference championship in 1998 by outscoring the second place finishers Haverford by 30 points (123-93). This team also took the 1998 outdoor conference championship - placing ahead of Haverford by a score of 144.5 to 134.
Danielle Duffy '98, a 2012 Garnet Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, collected two individual gold medals in the 200- and 400-meter runs, while pacing the 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams to gold medals and was named Performer of the Meet both at the indoor and outdoor championships.
Desiree Peterkin '00 - also a leg in the two gold medal relays with Duffy - took home gold in the triple jump with an 38 foot and 8.25 inch leap to tie both the program’s and conference record (Garnet jumper Catherine Laine ’98 set the record in 1997), both of which still hold today. With the qualifying mark, Peterkin went on to finish second overall at the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor National Championships.
